Today, a lot of people suffer from debt, bad credit and other financial woes when they should be retiring and enjoying life. Sadly, these people made a lot of financial mistakes when they were young that now they’re experiencing the consequences of.
If you don’t want to experience the same, here are four things you can do to prepare for the future:
Retirement Plan
This will be your safety net in times when you can no longer stretch your knees without the terrible crunch of old age. As early as in your twenties, you should already have opened a retirement plan in order to accrue a substantial amount in your golden years.
If you’re company employed, you can choose to contribute to its retirement program. This way, at each payday, your salary is deducted that will go through your retirement fund. If you’re self-employed, you can open your own account with assistance from a bank.
Your Children’s College Plan
Even if you’re single right now or married and don’t have children yet, you might want to start preparing for your children’s college fund. Tertiary education doesn’t come cheap even anywhere in the world. And as a parent, it is your obligation to give your children the best education in order to prepare them for the real world.
You can open an account and religiously fill it with college fund. Or, you could get an educational plan, which you should afford to pay monthly.
Clear Yourself of Debt
If you’re currently deciding on a car, choose the one that can last you for years. Even if it’s second-hand but works perfectly and is of good quality, then pick it over unaffordable luxury cars. But most importantly, pay it in cash. Avoid auto financing as it’ll trap you in debt for the next 2 to 5 years. Buy only what you can afford and this goes the same for your home.
If you have credit card debt, clear it ASAP so as to avoid bad rating in your credit history in the future.
More Income
Not only do you have to live frugally but you must also find ways for more income. You can build a small business which is comprised of your hobby. Find a part-time job, moonlight, and so on. The extra amount you’ll get can significantly help with your expenses, savings and so on.
The future is invariably changing. You’ll never know the economic situation a few years from now so it is best that you’re prepared. By doing these four things, you will in many ways, shield yourself from any financial catastrophes in the future.
